To support the launch of our new MGI JetVarnish 3D Evolution, we secured the cover of Pro Print magazine.
Brief: The purpose was to showcases the intricate embellishments the MGI can create and to generate interest in the market. We set out to develop a cover which entices the reader to touch and examine the print finishes. The brief to our in-house design team from our Marketing Manager was clear, she wanted to shift away from the Whirlwind brand to create an engaging stand-alone piece. The mask image was chosen as it creates the feeling of a celebration and can really come to life with raised varnish and foil.
Design: Like everyone at Whirlwind, our Graphic Designer was excited to get involved. He spent some time researching the MGI capabilities and was then able to put forward his recommendations. He strategically selected which areas to raise, to create a ridged feeling under finger. Inspired by the mask image he added the gold foil.
Just as we recommend you do, we did a test run. And we were glad. We realised quickly that the foil was too heavy and in the wrong areas. So we reversed where the foil was, printed, and success! This change enables the gold to support the original image and the line work and patterns beautifully showcase what the MGI can produce. For even more ‘touchability’ we printed the cover using a soft-touch laminate.
Outcome: The team at Pro Print were impressed, “I’ve been with the Pro Print Magazine group for over 26 years and the Whirlwind cover is the best cover I’ve seen.” The cover has generated a lot of buzz from the Whirlwind team and our customers. Our Sales Director, Gis Marven stated “since Pro Print came out, we’ve been inundated with queries”.
