Meet Scott, he has worked at Whirlwind for two and a half years. Working at Whirlwind helps Scott feel ‘normal’ (Scott was diagnosed with Autism when he was 4) and helps keep his life interesting!
Outside of work Scott enjoys listening to jazz, gaming and going to the movies. Scott loves going on holidays, most recently to Queensland where he hit the theme parks, ‘I like to do the extreme stuff’.
He is passionate about drawing. ‘I draw a lot, mostly interesting buildings, country scenes, windmills and bridges; just about anything that takes my interest.’
Here is some of his amazing artwork:
Scott realises that he does have some difficulty with listening and talking to people as his communication systems get a little confused. Sometimes he seems grumpy when he’s not, so appreciates it when people give him time to sort things out.
Scott let us know, ‘I really enjoy being at Whirlwind Printing and I appreciate how nice people are to me. Whirlwind has given me an opportunity that very few people would have, and it took a long time to find such a good company and the people I work with. Thank you Whirlwind, for your support and trusting me to work in your factory.’
This year Scott hopes to move into his own home, do more work and find new friends to share his interests and life with.
A message from Scott’s Mum:
At the age of four Scott was diagnosed with Autism, a challenging disability. Finding a normal life and work was always difficult. Two and half years ago Whirlwind offered Scott an opportunity to be like other people and offered him a job, they have treated him as an important and equal employee. This trust has brought Scott a long way. He’s overcome many challenges, he has gained more confidence including now he travels to work on public transport and has learnt new life skills , his life is meaningful and he looks forward to going to work and this has lead to improved communication skills and his quality of life. – Scott’s mum Cheryle Nye
